Is Invisalign Worth It? Pros, Cons and Cost
Invisalign is usually worth it if you have mild to moderate crowding, gaps or relapse and you are confident you will wear the aligners for about 22 hours a day; it is less worth it for complex bite problems or if you are likely to leave them out. In the UK it typically costs £1,500 to £5,500, and in London adult treatment starts from around £2,650.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Almost invisible at speaking distance | Only works if worn about 22 hours a day |
| Removable for eating, cleaning and occasions | You must remove them to eat and drink anything but water |
| Fewer emergency visits; no wires to break | Less predictable for some complex movements |
| Easy to brush and floss | Can cost more than metal braces for complex cases |
| Digital plan shows the expected result | Refinements are common and can add months |
| Often quicker for minor cases | Aligners can be lost or damaged |
At Orthodontists London we offer both aligners and fixed braces, so we can give you a straight answer on whether Invisalign is the best option for your teeth.
Is Invisalign worth the money?
For the right case, yes. You are paying for a planned, supervised course of treatment that straightens your teeth with very little impact on how you look day to day. Many adults would not have treatment at all if their only option was visible braces, so for them aligners make treatment possible.
Value depends on the result lasting. That means a proper examination before starting, a plan that addresses the bite as well as the front teeth, and retainers afterwards. A cheap course that straightens the front teeth but ignores the bite can relapse, and re-treatment costs more than doing it properly once.

What does Invisalign cost compared with braces?
| Treatment | Typical UK price | London price, from |
|---|---|---|
| Invisalign (minor to comprehensive) | £1,500–£5,500 | £2,650 central, £2,800 outer |
| Metal braces | £2,000–£3,500 | £3,650 central, £2,800 outer |
| Ceramic braces | £2,500–£4,000 | £4,000 central, £3,150 outer |
| Lingual braces | £4,500–£9,000+ | £9,870 central, £4,800 outer |
For simple cases, aligners can cost the same as metal braces or less. For complex cases, comprehensive aligner treatment often costs more than metal braces. Our guide to Invisalign cost in the UK breaks prices down by case type, and Invisalign vs braces compares speed and results.
Who is Invisalign worth it for?
Aligners tend to work well and feel worth the cost for:
- Adults with mild to moderate crowding or spacing who want discreet treatment.
- People whose teeth have moved since childhood braces, often the lower front teeth. Short courses can fix this in a few months.
- Professionals and performers who speak to clients or audiences and do not want visible brackets.
- People with good routines who will wear aligners consistently and take them out only to eat and clean.
- Anyone who finds fixed braces hard to clean around, since aligners come out for brushing and flossing.
When is Invisalign not worth it?
Aligners may not be the best use of your money if:
- Your case is complex. Severe rotations, large vertical movements and some skeletal bite problems are more predictable with fixed braces.
- You snack or sip drinks throughout the day. Each time, the aligners must come out and you should brush before putting them back. If that is not realistic, aligners will spend too long out of your mouth.
- You are likely to lose or forget them. Lost aligners mean replacements, delays and extra cost.
- You have untreated gum disease or decay. These must be treated first.
If any of these apply, ceramic or lingual braces can be a discreet fixed alternative.
What do people find hardest about Invisalign?
The most common difficulty is wear time. Twenty-two hours a day leaves two hours for all meals, drinks and cleaning. Long lunches, evenings out and travel make this harder. The second is the first few days of each aligner, which can feel tight and tender. Our guide to whether Invisalign hurts explains what is normal and how to manage it.
Others find the eating rules, the need to carry a case and toothbrush, and attachments on the teeth take getting used to. Most people adapt within a few weeks.

Request a consultationDoes Invisalign give permanent results?
The tooth movement is real and lasting, but no orthodontic result stays put without retention. Teeth tend to drift throughout life. Wearing retainers as instructed, usually nightly at first and then several nights a week long term, is what keeps the result. Budget for occasional replacement retainers: in London a clear removable retainer costs about £110 to £145 per arch. See our retainer cost guide.
How long does Invisalign take?
Minor cases can take 3 to 6 months. Moderate cases usually take 6 to 12 months and comprehensive cases 12 to 18 months or more. For minor cases, that is often faster than fixed braces, which usually take 18 to 24 months.
How can you make Invisalign better value?
- Choose a plan that fits your case. Do not pay for a comprehensive package if a shorter one will do the job, and do not choose a short package if your bite needs correcting.
- Check what is included. Refinements, retainers and reviews can add hundreds of pounds if they are extra.
- Ask about interest-free finance. Spreading the cost over 12 to 24 months at 0% avoids interest. Our guide to Invisalign monthly cost gives examples.
- Wear the aligners properly. Good wear avoids extra refinements and keeps treatment on schedule.
Is Invisalign worth it compared with doing nothing?
That depends on what bothers you. If crowding makes your teeth hard to clean, if your front teeth are at risk of damage, or if your bite is wearing your teeth, treatment can have practical benefits as well as cosmetic ones. If the concern is purely cosmetic and minor, it is a personal decision. We will give you an honest view at consultation, including when we think treatment is not needed.
