Braces Colours: How to Choose for Teens and Adults
The best braces colours for most people are darker or jewel shades such as navy, purple, dark green or deep red, because they make teeth look whiter, while white, clear and yellow ties tend to stain or make teeth look less white. You can change colour at every adjustment, usually every 6 to 10 weeks, and choosing colours does not change the cost of treatment.
| Colour | Effect on how teeth look | Stain risk | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Navy, dark blue | Makes teeth look whiter | Low | Teens and adults wanting colour without much contrast |
| Purple, violet | Makes teeth look whiter; bright but flattering | Low | Teens |
| Dark green, emerald | Makes teeth look whiter | Low | Teens; team colours |
| Deep red, burgundy | Warm; flatters most skin tones | Low | Teens; festive months |
| Silver, grey | Blends with metal brackets | Low | Adults with metal braces who want a subtle look |
| Pink, light blue, turquoise | Bright and fun | Medium | Younger teens; short-term themes |
| White | Can make teeth look yellower by contrast | High | Rarely recommended |
| Clear | Discreet at first | High; picks up food colour | Ceramic braces, with care |
| Yellow, gold | Can make teeth look yellow | Medium | Best avoided or used sparingly |
| Brown, black | Can look like food or gaps | Low | Use with care; black can make teeth look whiter but very bold |
Colour choice applies to braces that use elastic ties. At Orthodontists London we offer metal, ceramic and self-ligating braces, and we will show you the colour options at your fitting appointment.
What are braces colours?
The colours come from the small elastic rings, called ligatures or modules, that hold the archwire into each bracket. They are replaced every time your braces are adjusted, usually every 6 to 10 weeks, so you can pick new colours each visit. The brackets themselves are either metal or tooth-coloured ceramic and do not change.
Some brackets do not need ties at all. Self-ligating brackets have a built-in clip, so there is no coloured ring. If you have these and want colour, you may be able to add a few elastic rings, but it is not usually necessary. Our guide to the types of braces explains the different systems.
Which braces colours make teeth look whiter?
Darker, cooler shades create contrast with tooth enamel, which makes teeth look brighter. Navy, dark blue, purple, dark green and deep red all work well. Black is very effective at making teeth look white but can look bold, and from a distance it can look like gaps.
Lighter shades do the opposite. White and yellow ties can make teeth look yellower by comparison, and both show staining quickly.
Which braces colours should you avoid?
| Colour to avoid | Why |
|---|---|
| White | Stains easily; makes teeth look yellower by contrast |
| Yellow | Can make teeth look discoloured |
| Clear (with metal braces) | Picks up food colour and looks dull |
| Light brown, beige | Can look like food stuck in the braces |
| Bright green, lime | Can look like food from a distance |
None of these are harmful. They just tend not to look as good for as long.
What are the best braces colours for teenagers?
Teenagers often enjoy choosing colours, and it can make wearing braces more fun. Popular approaches include:
- Favourite colour. A single shade across all teeth.
- Alternating two colours. For example navy and silver, or purple and teal.
- Team or school colours. Football clubs and school colours are popular.
- Seasonal themes. Orange and black for Halloween, red and green for Christmas, pastels for spring.
- Rainbow. A different colour on each tooth.
- Matching to an event. A prom outfit or holiday.
If your teenager wants something bold for the summer holidays, they can switch to something calmer for the start of term at the next adjustment.
What are the best braces colours for adults?
Most adults with metal braces prefer subtle options:
- Silver or grey blends with the metal brackets and wire for a uniform, low-key look.
- Navy or dark blue is discreet and makes teeth look whiter.
- Dark purple or burgundy adds a little colour without standing out.
Adults with ceramic braces usually choose clear, tooth-coloured or white ties so the braces stay discreet. Because these can stain, tooth-coloured or pearl white ties are often a better choice than fully clear ones, especially if you drink a lot of coffee or tea. Our guide to clear and ceramic braces covers stain prevention.

Request a consultationDo coloured bands affect treatment?
No. Colour has no effect on how the braces work or how long treatment takes. Coloured ties are made from the same material as clear ones. Choosing a colour does not cost extra.
Some patients also wear elastics, small rubber bands hooked between upper and lower braces to correct the bite. These are different from ties and are usually clear or a standard colour. Wear them exactly as instructed, because they do affect treatment.
How do you match braces colours to your skin tone?
A few general ideas:
- Fair skin: light blues, purple, pink and silver often look good.
- Medium or olive skin: teal, dark green, deep red, gold and turquoise are popular.
- Dark skin: jewel tones, bright purples, deep blues, red and gold stand out well.
These are suggestions, not rules. Pick what you like.
How do you keep braces colours looking good?
- Brush after meals, or rinse with water if you cannot brush straight away.
- Limit coffee, tea, red wine, cola, curry and turmeric, especially with light colours.
- Avoid smoking, which stains ties and teeth.
- Use interdental brushes around brackets to stop plaque building up.
- Remember any staining is temporary, as ties are replaced at each adjustment.
How often can you change braces colours?
At every adjustment appointment, usually every 6 to 10 weeks. Over a typical 18 to 24 months of treatment, that is around 8 to 12 chances to try something new. If a tie breaks or comes off between appointments, contact us.
How much do braces cost?
Colours do not change the price. Typical London fees for adult metal braces start from about £2,800 in outer London and £3,650 centrally, and child metal braces from about £2,500 to £3,420. Ceramic braces cost more. Our guide to how much braces cost in the UK has the full price table.
